But it is important that we remember the Lord will never leave or forsake us. He has promised to change us into His image from glory to glory. By God's free grace and in His great mercy, which endureth forever, we know He will keep that promise and do that work. They are rather a withering condemnation of the error of true legalism, which is the claim of justification by the law. And I want to say right here that there are many who profess salvation by grace alone through faith alone in Christ alone who are nevertheless false converts. Though they would adamantly deny believing in justification by works, yet their hope in heaven is based upon their false confession, church attendance, fellowship with the people of God, and a certain moral code. And so they are closet legalists in a sense because they are not trusting in Christ but in their own works.
