| Every
week at PCC, we get numerous nasty, even threatening, letters, e-mails,
and phone calls in response to our public witness. Of course, we also get
much advice, correction, and instruction.
A Catholic man from
Virginia took the time to comment on our stand against Romanism and for
his soul. At least he admits we lunatics accurately share the doctrines of
Rome. I am not sure why he thinks we do not refute "Catholic
responses."
"I just wanted to thank you for your
great outreach to Catholics. As far as anti-Catholic lunacy goes, you
guys actually seem to try to do a good job giving the Catholic side of
things. Then, you give a textbook fundamentalist 'refutation' which, I
think, will be quite useful in my efforts to teach Catholics how to fend
off such nonsense. (It's not hard--particularly when fundamentalists
turn into frothing-at-the-mouth lunatics when they encounter a
Biblically literate Catholic.)
"Where I think you really make a
pact with Satan is where you completely ignore Catholic responses to
your fantastical claims. I guess I should also thank you for poorly
equipping people to debate Catholics by teaching them a bunch of
strawman arguments."
An educated, charismatic
Catholic from California has decided to "bind" us so that we
will be unable to any longer earnestly contend for the faith once
delivered unto the saints. The charismatic movement has truly been an
ecumenical catalyst.
"You make me glad that I am an
educated Roman Catholic. I shall pray for you, and I bind you, in the
name of Christ, from continuing to pour forth your errors and
misinterpretations of Holy Scripture. The Holy Spirit has given me a
testimony, and it is this: The fullness of God's revelation in the
person of Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ is preserved by His Church,
which is, as St. Paul said, the pillar and foundation of truth."
A lady from South Carolina
shares some evangelistic wisdom with us. Ah, where would we be without all
the instruction we get from such helpful — may we say, horsy
— women?
"You didn't witness to the
congresswoman. She put up with you because she assumed you were a nut.
You aren't sharing the love of God. You are convincing people that you
don't understand love. You can't blow a person into the fold with a cold
wind. Try shining the warmth of the sun. May God help you and forgive
you for misrepresenting His love."
A neo-evangelical,
ecumenist from Texas begins with a false presupposition and goes downhill
from there.
"I appreciate your conviction but
your public trashing of roman catholics and other christians from
different traditions does a grave disservice to the body of christ
worldwide. That type of vicious infighting serves to thwart efforts to
spread the gospel to the unchurched by making christianity appear to be
nothing but a confusing mass of people with different labels believing
wildly different things who can't ever stop fighting. You should study
the history of missionary efforts in japan in the 1600's and you'll see
that not only did protestant/catholic backbiting effectively sabotage
the conversion of that nation to christianity, it eventually caused the
violent persecution and martyrdom of thousands of new japanese
christians.
"It's fine to discuss doctrine with
your brothers, but if you don't have and show love you're in the wrong,
however great your doctrinal arguments might be."
And we continue to hear
from C.S. Lewis fans. Here is a small excerpt from a long letter written
by a loyal fan of Mr. Lewis.
"I recently listened to your episode
of heart of the matter discussing Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the
Wardrobe. I selected it because I was interested in a more discerning
view after all the hype about the movie. I was disappointed to find a
diatribe railing against C.S. Lewis, Mel Gibson and anyone willing to
support a mainstream movie. . . . I find it distressing when any
Christian individual is willing to insult and slander any other
individual much less an individual whose verbose writing on Christianity
speaks for itself. . . . I'm sure you are aware of Matt 7:1-2 yet you
seem happy to claim Mel Gibson is certainly not a Christian and blithely
infer that C.S. Lewis is not either. . . . Either you have read precious
little of Lewis work or you have very low reading comprehension. Lewis
is arguably the most prolific defender of Gods word in the 20th century;
possibly ever."
A lady from Edgerton,
Wisconsin was gracious enough to instruct us in the proper way to share
the biblical truth about homosexuality.
"I am writing in regards to your
recent protest of the Day of Silence at the Edgerton High School. As a
Christian, I was extremely dishearted to learn of your approach towards
our youngsters. Our first call as a Christian is to love God, and love
our neighbors. The Day of Silence is not an act that supports any
particular lifestyle, but rather puts a light on exactly what we were
called to do as Christians, 'Love one another as I have loved you.'
Jesus did not condemn ANYONE, but only loved them. We may not agree with
the choices everyone makes, but our first call is to love them, period.
"Also as a Christian, we are called
to bring others to Christianity. I do not feel we do this by showing a
God that is exclusive, and condemning. You bring others to Him by
showing His love and compassion for everyone. I have never met a single
person who has seen a sign condeming a particular group and has then
decided to become a Christian, on the contrary, I have talked to many
people who are turned off by such messages.
"If you believe that homosexuality
is a sin, but also believe that your job as a Christian is to bring a
person towards God, wouldn't a more effective approach be...'Let me tell
you about this wonderful and loving God.' instead of, what you are doing
is a sin, and you will be sent to Hell if you do not change your ways. I
can't imagine anyone who would want to become a Christian hearing the
latter message.
"Thank you for taking the time to
read this. God Bless"
Last, but not least, some
"TRULY enlightened poeple" from Oshkosh, Wisconsin "with
actual educations" share a piece of their mind. Unfortunately, they
spelled people wrong. They also misspelled receive
and organization. Those who strike the pose of a truly
enlightened, highly educated people in order to sneer at their opponents
should take the time to check their spelling. And perhaps they should not
be so generous in sharing pieces of their mind. One can be too generous in
that regard and eventually come up short.
"I (we) am writing to convey our
utter disgust with your organization. I am currently researching the
legality of your intrusive publications and have informed the local
postal service and the BBB. In addition, I can say with every certainty
that your agendas will never see fruition so long as there are TRULY
enlightened poeple such as ourselves with actual educations to make
informed decisions. If we recieve even ONE more of your mailings,
someone in your orginization WILL be hearing from an attorney."
