Mazo
Again
On Saturday, July 31, about
sixty Christians with WCU took their posts on the driveway and walkway to
the unlawful Department of Natural Resources nude beach
on the Wisconsin River near Mazomanie, Wisconsin. As usual, we ministered
to the "naturists" while they still had their clothes on rather
than go to the beach itself. As usual, our presence provoked intense anger
and a considerable police presence. Considering the former, we were happy
to have the latter. The anger which the perverts (yes, stripping naked in
front of children is perverted) are expressing, which also manifests
itself by phone calls and e-mails to WCU, appears to be fueled by our
dogged refusal to cease and desist reproving the Mazo nudists' unfruitful
works of darkness. But right is right, and God will vindicate our stand in
His due time. Meanwhile, WCU will continue to be a thorn in the public
nude movement's side and, we trust, an effective hindrance to an expansion
of its lewd recreation in our state even as we share the gospel with the
nudists. Back

Preaching to the Kerrys |
|
On August 3, my family
received word that presidential candidate John Kerry intended to make a
campaign stop in our town of Monroe. For security reasons, the stop had
only been announced several hours beforehand. We immediately headed for
town. The Lord kindly orchestrated our movements so that we were in the
perfect places at the perfect times to rebuke both John Kerry and his
wife, Teresa Heinz Kerry. We first made contact with the devilish duo on a
nearly deserted side street off of Monroe's courthouse square as their bus
very slowly drove by on the way to a public appearance. My wife and
daughters confronted the Kerrys with the graphic reality of their
murderous position on abortion. For my part, I walked along with the bus
for a distance, preaching in the window at the Kerrys as they stared out
at me.
Our next opportunity to
confront that evil pair came when they were outside the bus shaking hands
with a crowd. At that time, I preached to the Kerrys at will on sin,
judgment, the wrath to come, and the way of salvation. I was not hindered
by either local police or the Secret Service, although the SS did make an
earlier attempt to keep us away from the Kerrys.
By the time the Kerry
entourage headed out of town, a young man from our church, Nick Bergum,
had joined us. Again, we set up on a small side street. This time, the
Kerrys decided to frame their faces with an open window on the bus
opposite from where we set up. However, at the last minute, I crossed the
street and walked along with the slow-moving bus, once again experiencing
the joy which a pastor should feel when confronting the powerful but evil
on behalf of the Lord. Later at a campaign stop in Shullsburg, Wisconsin,
Nick Bergum was able to again confront John Kerry with the Word of God
while my family was in the right place to expose his entire motorcade to
our signs (Psalm 2:10-12).

AIDS
Ride Witness
For the second year in a
row, the AIDS ride came through Green County, Wisconsin where Pilgrims
Covenant Church is located, although this time, the riders spent a much
shorter time here. Our two-day witness along their route last year no
doubt had a salutary effect in this regard! This year, riders were
confronted with banners and preaching in two Green County cities, one
Lafayette County village, and one Rock County town by members of my
church. We especially enjoyed greeting riders and AIDS ride workers with
gospel preaching as they woke up at New Glarus High School on the morning
of August 6. As AIDS ride personnel loaded support vehicles and AIDS
riders did their pre-ride exercises in the school parking lot, we kept up
a steady barrage of preaching over a "truth horn" set on volume
ten. We also held gospel signs and banners as well as a sixteen-foot
banner bearing the message "Homosexuality is sin." A nightly
television news report out of Madison not only showed our banners but also
included a brief portion of our preaching. At every town where we
confronted the sodomite and pro-sodomite AIDS riders, many other people
also benefited from our ministry even as they were given further insight
into the heart of New Sodom. For instance, in the little farming town of
Argyle, a sodomite man dressed as a hula dancer and a sodomitess dressed
as a devil were among the riders who mocked the preachers with
obscenities. It is not hard to imagine the conversation at the local
hardware store and feed mill for the next several days. Whenever we
reprove the unfruitful works of darkness, the mainstreaming of those works
is dealt a setback. May the Lord's people become more aggressive -- one
might say "bold as a lion" (Proverbs 28:1) -- in this regard! Back

This unsaved man sat down
and
listened to several of us preach at the farmers' market. Then Nick
Bergum
spoke one-on-one with him. The man said he was very late for an
appointment but that he simply could
not stop listening to our preaching! |
Two
More Trips to the Farmers' Market
WCU returned to the
farmers' market on the Capitol Square in Madison on August 14 and
September 8. The first ministry event, on a Saturday, enabled us to preach
and offer gospel
tracts to an estimated 20,000 people. We also held gospel
banners and sang hymns. The second outing took place at the Wednesday
farmers' market which is considerably smaller but still good-sized. What a
blessing it is to "preach the gospel to every creature" (Mark
16:15)! Unfortunately, it seems to be a blessing which most Christians are
more than content to live without! Back

Strike
While the Iron Is Hot!
In late August, the news
media revealed that officers of the Janesville Police Department had
arrested a number of sodomite men for committing lewd acts in the local
park. In fact, one of the sodomites even groped a plain-clothes police
officer! To say that he made a bad choice of victims would be an
understatement. Among those arrested was an 84-year-old businessman. With
interest intense and emotions running high in Janesville (population
52,133), WCU began lit dropping in that town and also conducted four
pickets.
Our first picket took place
the day after the area television, radio, and newspapers broke the story
about the sodomite ring in the park. We set up signs and banners at a busy
intersection near the park. The signs had gospel messages, and the
sixteen-foot banner read, "Homosexuality is sin." We were
enthusiastically supported by the vast majority of people driving past. We
received what can only be described as a hero's welcome -- with some noted
and heated exceptions, of course. Without going into specifics, it is a
joy to report that we received warm support from a number of officials
from several different government departments.

One corner of a picket in
Janesville |
|
The most vitriolic,
sustained, and personal attack which we experienced came from a pastor.
Although he claimed to agree that homosexuality is a sin, this wolf
insisted that we should not publicly state such a thing and that we were
"idiots" and "hateful" for doing so. Our sign
"Christ can set you free" won his approval, but he was fighting
mad about the "sin" sign. When I told him that I am a pastor, he
said, "I'm glad I am not a pastor like you." I let him know the
feeling was mutual. We then debated our differences with his howling
gradually dying away, being muffled as it were by the Word of God.
Interestingly, my opposite never used one single verse of Scripture to
back up his claims that me and mine were wrong, hateful, and sinful in our
reproving the works of New Sodom. During a subsequent literature drop in
Janesville with the WCU brochure Homosexuality:
The Truth, the same pastor confronted Mike Foht, telling
him, "If I weren't a Christian, I would lay you out on the
sidewalk." He also made clear that Mike had better not ever come back
to his church's neighborhood again. Naturally, in less than a week, Mike
was back to lit drop that neighborhood with What
the Bible Really Says about Homosexuality!
On September 8, during
another WCU picket in Janesville, what certainly appeared to be a sodomite
man leaped out of his car and charged a group of us holding banners and
signs. The man was screaming obscenities and threatening to
"kill" us. As I confronted him, a police officer suddenly came
past me from behind and in no time had the man in handcuffs and on his way
downtown. The officer had been sitting in heavy traffic several traffic
lanes away. Without hesitating, he turned on his lights, left his car, and
rushed over to nail our assailant. The officer was very upset over the
obscenity and threats which he had heard. Never make the mistake of
thinking that all police officers are compromised at best and evil at
worst. There are many fine officers in our state and nation. We thank the
Lord for every one of them! When we do public ministry, truth has its say;
the status quo is shaken; hearts are revealed; consciences are pierced;
lines are drawn; and people are provoked, sometimes even forced, to decide
between light or darkness. Isn't that exactly what our nation needs? Back

Cheese
Days
The city of Monroe held its
Cheese Days celebration September 17-19. Believe it or not, this year, we
are told 150,000 people visited our town of 10,000 during this event,
which includes the longest parade in Wisconsin. Our church, Pilgrims
Covenant, took advantage of the occasion by conducting street evangelism
on the weekend nights of Cheese Days as well as at the parade on Sunday
afternoon. Most of the activities of this biennial event take place on
Monroe's square, which is closed to vehicular traffic for that purpose but
increasingly packed with people with a peak density on Sunday afternoon
following the parade. We spent many hours standing on different corners of
the square preaching, holding gospel banners, handing out gospel tracts,
and witnessing one-on-one. Some of our number made regular swings through
the crowd, handing out tracts. All in all, by the grace of God, we shared
the gospel with tens of thousands of people. Back

A
Word of Encouragement
We continue to get
encouraging notes and requests for our literature from people in many
states and countries. Some of these contacts come from our literature
drops, some as a result of visits to our web site. In the period covered
by this report, we were contacted by individuals from a number of
different and far-flung states as well as Canada, South Africa, Northern
Ireland, and England. We continue to see much fruit from our door-to-door,
truth-spreading campaign, and not just with regard to the issue of
homosexuality. For instance, recently, a young woman whose sister had just
died contacted us after receiving a WCU brochure on her door. She was an
unbeliever but had many questions about the Lord and eternal life. I wrote
back to her, sharing the way of salvation and also asking if she would
like a Bible along with some other materials. She eagerly forwarded her
home address to us in a note beginning with "I am so thankful that
you sent a reply to me."
