| Today,
Wisconsin Christians United will be back to picket and preach on the Mazo
Beach parking lot and the one-mile gravel walk leading to Wisconsin's only
public nude beach. Of course, there is a good reason for Mazo Beach having
that distinction. Public nudity is unlawful and not tolerated on public
land anywhere else in the state! The Department of Natural Resources and
the Dane County district attorney continue to parrot the phrase
"public nudity, in and of itself, is not unlawful." At the same
time, persons appearing naked in public everywhere but at Mazo Beach are
quickly arrested.
WCU has documented the sordid truth behind
the DNR's Mazo naturist reservation. A summary of the back room deals and
reckless hypocrisy which birthed the nude beach and continues to nourish
it can be found at http://www.pccmonroe.com/mazo.htm.
This is the seventh year of WCU's campaign
to put an end to the DNR's "adult entertainment" establishment
on the Wisconsin River near Mazomanie. The beach is the only place in
Wisconsin where children of any age are admitted to view adult nudity.
Tragically, it is also a place where nude children are mixed in with nude
adults. What an outrage that Wisconsin taxpayers foot the bill for Mazo
Beach and the average citizen can no longer use that beautiful beach or
the portion of the Wisconsin River adjacent to it!
Thanks to WCU's persistence, the naturist
lobby groups who so fiercely defend their right to be naked in public have
been stopped cold in their stated design to expand public nudity to other
beaches in Wisconsin. Both sides are now dug in with the naturists
confined to the one beachhead they have commandeered from the taxpayers of
our state.
Today, WCU will be on hand in force
beginning at 9:30 AM. We have notified the DNR of our plans and expect
officers to be present to keep the "nature lovers" from
resorting to the violence they so often threaten and have turned to in the
past. As usual, WCU's ministry activities will take place only on the
parking lot and the walkway where law enforcement allows no public nudity.
The DNR's position is that while "public nudity, in and of itself, is
not unlawful," it is unlawful for the naturists to be nude publicly
except on the public beach at Mazo. Perhaps Bill Clinton could explain.
