At 7:45 A.M., Saturday, August 28, I led a twelve-man team out of the
woods adjacent to the gravel driveway leading to the Mazomanie nude beach.
Before the astonished eyes of a number of sexual perverts waiting in their
cars for the road to the beach to officially open at 8:00 A.M., the team
stretched a chain across the road, attaching it to a post on one side and
a tree on the other. Leaping out of their cars, the beach-goers loudly
protested our action. Referring to a large sign hanging from the chain,
one exclaimed, "Closed by the Church of Jesus Christ! You
can't do that!" He was told, "Yes, we can do that; and
we just did."
From 7:45 to 8:15 with no police present, the small WCU advance
team held their ground against the taunts and threats of the steadily
growing crowd of beach-goers desperate to satisfy their lusts. The
perverts had called the police and began to comfort themselves with the
thought that once the authorities arrived on the scene, it would not take
them long to remove the twelve blockers.
By 8:15, the crowd of frustrated beach-goers had grown
considerably, and the early WCU team called in another wave of blockaders. This team had been waiting in nearby
vans and communicating via radio with the advance team. At 8:30, yet
another wave of blockaders led by Pastor Wayne Rohde and a group of
picketers led by Pastor Dale Demary were called to the scene and took up
positions. What a blessing to have two such courageous shepherds in
leadership. Also present on the scene were Pastors Dave Liebherr and Paul
Stiefvater.
Thus began the almost eight-hour
blockade of Mazo beach by forty determined men. It was a
day which featured much witnessing, hymn singing, praying, preaching,
press interaction, and police negotiation. It was a day which made it very
hard for a very large number of people to commit evil and which forced
them, and the state of Wisconsin, to take a long, hard look at some dark
deeds which the devil would rather be kept from the light. May God bring
repentance to those who had the voice of their conscience reinforced by
the witness of Christ's Church.
Eventually, police presence on the scene included seven state
troopers, a number of sheriff's deputies, and a half-dozen armed
Department of Natural Resources wardens. Throughout the day, the DNR's
leadership insisted that the blockaders would have to remove the chain and
vacate the beach road or face arrest. They were informed that WCU would do
so immediately upon receiving a guarantee that all persons going nude on
the beach would be arrested. The request was refused, and WCU then refused
to lift the blockade.
Midway through the day, DNR officials sealed off the mouth of the
gravel road on which the blockade was set up, forcing all beach-goers to
stay on the road with which the beach in-drive intersects, a road which by
now was lined with scores of cars from at least seven states! While many
beach-goers eventually grew tired of waiting (or became convicted by our
presence) and went home, a sizable number continued to wait, desperate it
seemed to reach the beach and fulfill their demonic obsessions. Before the
police eventually stopped them from doing so, a small number of the most
desperate maneuvered around the blockaders through the woods and trudged
on foot the 1.2 miles down the only road to the beach. Seen doing this
were homosexuals; a number of adults with children, including a man in a
purple dress carrying a little girl; a man wearing a North American Man
Boy Love Association t-shirt; a husband/wife doctor couple from Monroe,
Wisconsin; and a number of men with glazed eyes who acted almost as if
they were in some sort of satanic trance. Noticing that a
disproportionate number of the men waiting to go into the beach were
carrying video cameras and still cameras, I reminded DNR officials that
nude beaches are a primary source of child pornography. Upon
being told that the DNR would need "hard evidence" that such
crimes were taking place, I pointed out the obvious, "Sexual
perverts, cameras, naked children, how much evidence do you need?"
By early-afternoon, the lead DNR negotiator told me that
they were not going to make any arrests and that their only request was
that WCU vacate the road by the park's closing time at 8:00 P.M.!
At 3:30 P.M., following a short worship service, we took down our chain
and left the road with our message fully declared, our mission
accomplished, and under no threat of arrest! To God be the glory! Press
coverage was extensive on the event, with virtually all television reports
showing the "Closed by the Church of Jesus Christ" sign and with
the sound of the men blockaders singing hymns in the background! Since the
blockade, I have had many opportunities to debate the Mazo beach issue on
various talk programs and news reports. At this time, it appears that I
may be charged with a crime for organizing and leading the blockade, but
it is highly unlikely that anyone else will be charged with anything.
I cannot say enough about the behavior of those men and women who
took up their positions on that road to the beach August 28. During the
blockade, every one of them behaved with the utmost integrity in a manner
worthy of the gospel of Jesus Christ and, in fact, showed themselves able
representatives of our Lord by sharing the gospel with the many needy
persons on the scene through the use of the spoken as well as written
word. I am a man greatly blessed to be able to call such unsung heroes my
friends!
There is no doubt that our blockade struck a great blow for
righteousness and made a great impression on everyone present. For
example, several law enforcement officials went out of their way to shake
my hand and voice their tacit approval, not only of our actions but also
of our behavior! During the many long negotiations which I had with police
officials, I was able to challenge them to do the right thing, especially
the Christian police officers. It is important to point out that all
police officers and DNR wardens on the scene of the blockade last Saturday
treated us with the utmost respect; and though they insisted they would
"do their job" and arrest us if ordered to do so, many also
expressed sympathy for our cause—the cause of Christ. There is one
exception to this rule, and his name is Rick Wojiak. Mr. Wojiak is the DNR
area land manager, an upper level official. During his time on the scene,
Mr. Wojiak displayed a very cozy relationship with many of the
beach-goers. He was heard to make denigrating remarks about the Christians
on the scene and also accused me of not telling the truth in an earlier
conversation I had with him on the phone. In addition, he told the press
that Mazo beach causes no more problems than do other highly-used
recreational lands! This is a blatant deception. Mr. Wojiak knows it. The
DNR's own records prove that as does a sign posted on the beach in-drive. The
"Notice to Visitors" includes a warning that rangers will be
making an effort to enforce laws against lewd and lascivious conduct
"due to incidents of sexual misconduct" at the Mazo beach!

What is so hard about posting a sign like this?

WCU will continue our campaign to put an end to the madness at Mazo
beach. We will continue a regime of treatment until, by the grace of God,
our state is free of this metastasizing cancer. A number of strategies are
being developed. If you would like to be on the list for future pickets
and blockades which may occur this year or next (if necessary), please
notify me of that. We are also in the process of a petition drive in the
towns surrounding the Mazo beach area. If you could help with that some
day soon, please contact us. It is also very important that as many people
as possible write and call the appropriate state officials to demand, not
ask, but to demand that the perversion-breeding, child-porn-spawning,
taxpayer-funded peepshow on the Wisconsin River be eliminated. If you have
written and called officials in the past, now is the time to do so again.
(See below for specifics.)
Wisconsin has become a haunt of perverts and a spectacle to the
entire nation because our public officials do not have the courage to
stand up to a sexually perverse elite who want their own open-air
bathhouse on a public waterway. Nevertheless, we will win this battle if
we stay strong and persevere while keeping our eyes fixed on the Author
and Perfecter of our faith.
P.S. Of the small contingent who circumvented our
blockade to get to the beach, three men from three different states were
arrested for committing sexual acts in public once they reached their
destination! May God rescue the poor children the DNR allows to be
subjected to such an environment.
