Open letter to Roman Catholic "pilgrims": Dear Roman Catholic

Dear Brethren,

This coming Monday, August 15, a small team of us from Pilgrims Covenant Church will be traveling four hours north of Monroe to be a biblical witness in front of the Shrine of Our Lady of Good Help, which is near the small hamlet of Champion, Wisconsin. During this past year, the pope made this shrine the first in America to have official Vatican approval as a genuine apparition site. Since then, "pilgrimages" to this shrine have exploded. This "Christian" shrine has also received much attention from the secular media, including national and international media. As is to be expected, the evangelical media is ignoring the situation. But then, when it comes to this shrine and all things Romish, it is not as if the "Christian" media personalities are doing anything different from most evangelical pastors, are they? Of course, those ministers have more important things to attend to, don't they? For instance, many of the evangelical churches in our town—Reformed and Arminian—are busy "Promoting fellowship and providing Christ-centered recreation"—whatever that is—through the "Church Softball League." Among the teams of that "Christian" league of "Christian" fellowship through "Christian" recreation is a team from the local Roman Catholic church. Now, if full grown Christian men insist on whiling away their time playing little boy games, it would be nice if they could at least do so without promiscuously cheapening the name "Christian" and engaging in spiritual fornication, don't you think?

But as to the Shrine of Our Lady of Good Help, never mind that the world is seeing this ungodly, Christ-mocking, soul-damning, heathenish spectacle in Champion, Wisconsin as Christian. Never mind that this site will be yearly visited by many hundreds of thousands of deceived, hell-bound Roman Catholics. It simply will not do to upset those Roman Catholic allies in the culture wars or jeopardize financial donations to "Christian" radio and the political-religious activist network. Come to think of it, it wouldn't do to put the "Christian" Softball League at risk! Deuteronomy 32:18: “Of the Rock that begat thee thou art unmindful, and hast forgotten God that formed thee.”

This Monday is the “Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary.” Busloads of Roman Catholics, led by Roman clergy, will be rolling in from all over the nation to take part in an orgy of idolatry and blasphemy. The program begins with an open-air mass at 10 AM. After that, with much pomp and circumstance, a large idol of "Our Lady" will be carried about the grounds so all can honor and worship her, and there will be other such rituals. Through the day, there will be more masses and more rituals.

Lord willing, we will be on hand by 9 AM with our signs, literature, and as the situation provides, preaching. Attached you will find an open letter I have written which we will be handing out to the Roman Catholic "pilgrims." I am writing to ask some of you, as the Lord may lead you, to pray for us and those to whom we minister. This shrine is in a very Roman Catholic area, and the setting will be rural. So one never knows how the local police, many of whom will be Roman Catholic, are going to react to the inevitable demands by the Roman clergy that we be removed from the public property in front of the shrine.

Sincerely,

Ralph Ovadal
