NAACP Offends the GLBTs
Report for January 31, 2004

Even the ultra-liberal NAACP has managed to get in trouble with Sodom's speech monitors! Speaking in a Baptist church at an NAACP function, Dr. Sheila Koger mentioned that children get confused by "transgenders." For instance, that would be men wearing dresses, long hair, and perfume. Dr. Koger went so far as to say that the Bible does not "condone" homosexuality. Again, she made that remark in a church. Then, for good measure, she gave a very basic anatomical reminder that women and men are made different by God, which is why we have women and men. The NAACP has apologized, but sodomite spokesman Bert Easter says that the apology falls short. Maybe he wants Dr. Koger to say, "God did create Adam and Steve, not Adam and Eve. Men do have wombs."

NAACP apologizes for speaker's remarks

A speech earlier this week that criticized homosexuality and transgendered people was inappropriate, according to the state NAACP.

During a commemorative service Monday honoring Martin Luther King Jr., Dr. Sheila Koger of Columbia's Bethlehem Baptist Church said that transgendered people confuse children and that the Bible doesn't condone homosexuality.

"God said in the beginning he created Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve," Koger said Monday. "If you don't got a womb, then you're a man."

The service at Zion Baptist Church was sponsored by the S.C. chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.

In a statement released Friday, the S.C. NAACP said her comments do not represent the group.

"The remarks by Dr. Sheila Koger regarding sexual preference did not represent the views of the NAACP and were inappropriate during a service designed to bring together the various sectors of the community," the statement said.

Koger could not be reached for comment Friday night.

Lonnie Randolph Jr., president-elect of the S.C. NAACP, said he was offended by Koger's speech.

Bert Easter, president of the South Carolina Gay and Lesbian Pride Movement, welcomed the NAACP's comments, but said it still falls short. He said it doesn't specifically address the transgender issue.

"They are a part of our society and our community," Easter said.

He would like to discuss Koger's comments with her, but she has not returned his calls, he said.
