Report for November 29, 2003
The mayor of Saint John in the
Canadian province of New Brunswick decided not to have a sodomite float in
that city's "Santa Claus parade." Mayor McAlary is said to be
dutifully "pro-gay," but the word is that she did not think that
the sodomite float had anything to do with Santa Claus. She almost got
away with it too, but the sodomites think they heard her make several
discriminating comments off the record. So now it's straight to the Human
Rights Tribunal for Shirley McAlary where she will be humiliated,
excoriated, and if found guilty, ordered to pay big bucks to the sodomite
she offended.

SAINT JOHN, N.B. - A gay pride group in New Brunswick says it will file a
human rights complaint against the mayor of Saint John.
The board of directors for Port City Rainbow Pride decided to file the
complaint against Shirley McAlary today.
McAlary recently decided not to allow the group to enter a float in the
city's Santa Claus parade.
The group's president, Danny Jardine, says their lawyer is drawing up a
complaint to file at the provincial level.
Jardine says he initially wasn't in favour of the complaint because
McAlary had been supportive of the group.
But after meeting with the mayor regarding the parade, Jardine says she
made a few discriminatory comments.
Saint John mayor says she didn't
discriminate

SAINT JOHN - The mayor of Saint John says she's not
worried about the possibility of a human rights complaint against her for
not allowing a gay pride group to enter a float in the Santa Claus Parade.
The Port City Rainbow Pride group has decided to complain to the Human
Rights Commission about Shirley McAlary.
They say the mayor discriminated against them when she decided their float
couldn't be in the parade.
Mayor Shirley McAlary she says she's never discriminated against gays or
anyone. She points to last summer's Gay Pride Day in Saint John as an
example. McAlary maintains that a float depicting gay families was more of
a political statement than a celebration of Christmas.
"If they had of had a float application in and they wanted to put a
whole choir together singing Christmas carols and it wasn't promoting
their lifestyle then it would have been fine."
But Danny Jardine, president of Port City Rainbow Pride, disagrees and
says the board of the group felt it had to do something in response to the
mayor's decision.
"If we win this, then it will set a precedent across Canada. I guess
when mayors are asked to do these sorts of thing or to allow these sorts
of things they won't be able to say no."
Jardine says they will file a complaint with the provincial Human Rights
Commission in the next week.
But the mayor wonders who the group will file its complaint against.
"The council has nothing to do with it, nor does the mayor as my role
as mayor I have nothing to do with the Santa Claus Parade. There's no
committee, there isn't anything. There's no funding, there's no
organization, there isn't anything."
The mayor says the only reason she was involved was because there was no
one else to do it.
