Sodomite Speech
Monitors
Report for December 27, 2002
The following was sent to us
by someone who receives e-mails from the Gay & Lesbian Alliance
Against Defamation (GLAAD). The topic was GLAAD's ongoing monitoring of
the media for "homophobic" remarks. We have taken out GLAAD's
contact points. Note how quickly station managers caved in when the
homo-fascists called them on the carpet.
December 20, 2002
Dear Friends,
As GLAAD's regional work with radio stations in the Northwest and
Southwest regions has increased, I would like to take this opportunity to
fill you in on our progress.
Should you have any questions or comments, please do not hesitate to
contact me.
Happy Holidays!! Thank you for supporting GLAAD!!
TUCSON, ARIZONA: KFMA 92.1 & 101.3, The Frank Show
We were alerted to a defamatory comment made on 92.1 in Arizona. Frank,
the morning show's DJ, played a recorded promo from Comedy Central that
said "I don't know faggot." Although Frank tried defending
himself by saying that he had not created the promo, Comedy Central did,
we explained to him why he was not supposed to be use it. We also spoke to
the General Manager about it who told us he was going to pay more
attention to the show's content.
ANCHORAGE, ALASKA: KMSX 103.9, The Mornings with Devan & Roxi
On Tuesday, Oct. 29, Devan and Roxi discussed the case of a middle high
school student who had been reprimanded in school for saying:
"Basketball is so gay." According to many LGBT activists in the
area, the two morning DJs then accused the school of doing the wrong thing
and blasted gays for being so sensitive. They took calls from those who
agreed with their position and didn't take calls from people who
identified as gay.
GLAAD contacted the station and served as a mediator between the DJs and
the community. We suggested a community meeting where activists could talk
about why they thought the show was offensive. Although the meeting didn't
take place, the DJs apologized.
OMAHA, NEBRASKA KQKQ Sweet 98.5 FM, The Primetime Party with Geller
Geller was asking heterosexual male listeners to call their parents on the
air and try to convince them that they were gay. If their parents believed
the joke, the callers would get a prize. GLAAD called the Programming
Director and explained to him that unfortunately, many LGBT people are
rejected by their families because they are gay. Coming out is still a
difficult process for most gay and lesbian people, and one that shouldn't
be trivialized. The Programming Director apologized and told us that he
was going to be more careful with the show's content. As a result, members
from Omaha's LGBT community are monitoring the show daily.
OMAHA, NEBRASKA KEZO 92 FM: The Todd & Tyler Show
We received another report from an activist in the Omaha area about Todd
and Tyler calling Michael Jackson a "homosexual pedophile."
GLAAD called to explain that homosexuality and pedophilia were completely
different and should not be linked. The producers apologized for these
comments. In addition, this same activist who alerted us about both radio
stations in Omaha has volunteered to listen to the shows.
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: VIVA 107.1
This Spanish-language station was airing a promo for a party the station
was sponsoring. In it, an "effeminate" gay man asked, "am I
allowed to go to?" The DJ responds, "sure, just don't stand
behind me."
We contacted the station and explained to the producer why this was
stereotypical and defamatory. The promo was removed the same day. The
producer also emphasized his interest to work with the LGBT Latino
community around future events.
DALLAS, TEXAS: KVIL 103.7, The Dixon & Miller Show
Dixon and Miller had a segment where the "Christmas Fairy" comes
to town. According to the activist who alerted us, this was clearly a
misrepresentation of a gay man who would offer presents to the audience in
a very effeminate voice. GLAAD contacted the station and explained why
stereotypes are wrong. The General Manager apologized and promised us that
this will never happen again.
As always, feel free to contact me regarding any concerns you have in your
area. I am available at the numbers below. I have also enjoyed the many
emails those of you have sent me about where you are and what you do, and
I encourage all of you to feel free to let me know more about the LGBT
work you hope to do in your area.
